How Couples and Family Therapy Can Help
- Improve Communication: Learn and practice healthier ways to talk, listen, and express needs and feelings effectively.
- Identify and Change Negative Patterns: Recognize and interrupt unhelpful cycles of interaction that keep you stuck in conflict or distance.
- Enhance Emotional Connection & Intimacy: Rebuild or deepen emotional bonds, trust, and closeness.
- Develop Conflict Resolution Skills: Learn strategies to navigate disagreements constructively and respectfully.
- Strengthen Family Structures & Roles: Clarify roles, improve boundaries, and establish healthier family hierarchies.
- Foster Empathy and Understanding: Help members see situations from each other's perspectives.
- Heal Past Wounds: Address past hurts or betrayals that may be impacting current relationships.
- Build on Strengths: Identify and leverage the existing strengths within the couple or family system.
- Support Co-Parenting: For separated or divorced parents, develop effective co-parenting strategies.
Who Attends Sessions? For couples therapy, both partners typically attend. For family therapy, the attendees can vary β sometimes it's the whole family, sometimes specific subsystems (e.g., parents, siblings, a parent and child). Kirsten will discuss the best approach for your specific situation. It's also common for different family members to attend sessions on an alternating basis.
