Using Your HSA/FSA for Therapy Payments

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can typically use these pre-tax funds to pay for qualified medical expenses, which often include psychotherapy services. At Tretbar Therapy LLC, we accept HSA and FSA cards for payment of your therapy sessions.

What are HSAs and FSAs?

  • Health Savings Account (HSA): A tax-advantaged savings account available to individuals enrolled in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP). Funds can be used for qualified medical expenses and typically roll over year to year.
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA): An employer-sponsored account that allows you to set aside pre-tax money for eligible healthcare expenses. FSA funds usually have a "use it or lose it" rule by the end of the plan year (or a grace period).

How to Use Your HSA/FSA Card

Using your HSA or FSA card for therapy sessions with us is straightforward:

  1. Ensure Your Card Functions as a Credit/Debit Card:
    • Most HSA/FSA cards are issued with a Visa, MasterCard, or similar logo, allowing them to be processed like a standard credit or debit card.
  2. Provide Your Card Information:
    • When you become a client, you will be asked to put a card on file in our secure SimplePractice Client Portal for automatic payment after each session. You can enter your HSA or FSA card details here.
  3. Payment Processing:
    • After each session, the session fee will be charged to the HSA/FSA card you have on file.
  4. Keep Your Receipts/Superbills:
    • While we process the payment, it's always a good practice for you to keep records of your therapy expenses for your HSA/FSA documentation, in case your plan administrator requires them for verification. You can access all your payment receipts through the Client Portal.
    • If you are also submitting claims to insurance for out-of-network reimbursement, the superbill we provide will also serve as a detailed receipt.

Check with Your Plan Administrator

While psychotherapy is a widely accepted eligible expense, it's always a good idea to confirm the specifics with your HSA or FSA plan administrator or consult your plan documents if you have any doubts about coverage for mental health services.

Important Considerations

  • Sufficient Funds: Ensure you have sufficient funds in your HSA or FSA account to cover the session fees. If a payment is declined, you will be responsible for providing an alternative payment method.
  • "Use It or Lose It" (FSAs): If using an FSA, be mindful of your plan's deadlines for incurring expenses and submitting claims to avoid losing unused funds.

Using your HSA or FSA can be a convenient and tax-efficient way to pay for your therapy services. If you have any questions about using your HSA/FSA card, please feel free to contact our office.
