Telehealth Sessions: What to Expect & Best Practices

Tretbar Therapy
Written by Tretbar Therapy

Telehealth (also known as online therapy, virtual therapy, or teletherapy) offers a convenient and effective way to access therapy services from the comfort of your own space. We are pleased to offer telehealth sessions via our secure, HIPAA-compliant platform, SimplePractice.

To help you make the most of your telehealth experience, this guide outlines what to expect and some best practices.

What is Telehealth Therapy?

Telehealth therapy involves conducting therapy sessions remotely using video conferencing technology. It allows you to connect with your therapist face-to-face, just as you would in an office, but through your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Important Note on Location

You must be physically located in the State of Kansas at the time of your telehealth session for us to provide service, due to state licensing laws. Your therapist will verify your location at the beginning of each session.

Benefits of Telehealth

  • Convenience: Attend sessions from home or any private location, saving travel time.
  • Accessibility: Can be helpful for those with mobility issues, busy schedules, or limited transportation.
  • Comfort: Some individuals feel more comfortable and open in their own familiar environment.
  • Continuity of Care: Allows for continued therapy even if you or your therapist are temporarily unable to meet in person.

Preparing for Your Telehealth Session: Best Practices

To ensure a smooth and effective telehealth session, please consider the following:

  1. Technology Setup:
    • Device: Use a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone with a camera, microphone, and speakers.
    • Internet Connection: A stable, high-speed internet connection is crucial. A wired connection is often more reliable than Wi-Fi if available.
    • Platform: Ensure you know how to access the session through our Client Portal. Test your audio and video beforehand if possible.
    • Updates & Charging: Make sure your device is charged or plugged in, and that your browser or any necessary app is up-to-date.
  2. Private and Quiet Space:
    • Choose a location where you will not be interrupted and where others cannot overhear your conversation. This is essential for your confidentiality and focus.
    • Consider using headphones to enhance privacy and reduce background noise.
    • Minimize distractions (e.g., turn off TV, silence phone notifications unless your phone is your session device).
  3. Minimize Distractions:
    • Treat your telehealth session like an in-person appointment. Avoid multitasking (e.g., checking emails, doing chores).
    • If others are in your home, inform them that you need uninterrupted time.
  4. Be On Time:
    • Log in to the session a few minutes early to ensure your technology is working and you are ready to begin at the scheduled time.
  5. Lighting and Camera Angle:
    • Ensure your face is well-lit so your therapist can see you clearly. Avoid sitting with a bright window directly behind you.
    • Position your camera so your face is centered and visible.
  6. Emergency Contact Information:
    • For safety reasons, your therapist may ask you to confirm your physical location at the start of each session and may need an emergency contact person who could be reached if there were a concern about your immediate safety during a session.

What to Expect During a Telehealth Session

  • Similar to In-Person: The content and flow of a telehealth session are generally very similar to an in-person session. You and your therapist will talk, explore issues, and work towards your goals.
  • Visual Cues: While not the same as being in the same room, video allows for important visual cues (facial expressions, body language).
  • Technical Issues: Occasionally, technical difficulties (e.g., poor connection, audio/video lag) can occur. If this happens, you and your therapist will have a plan for how to reconnect (e.g., try logging out and back in, switch to a phone call for a brief period if video fails completely). Please be patient if these issues arise.
  • Ending the Session: Ensure you have properly disconnected from the session at the end.

Telehealth for Couples and Families

If multiple people are participating in a telehealth session:

  • Ideally, use one device in the same room if you are physically together, so everyone can be seen and heard easily.
  • If in separate locations, each person will need their own device and private space. Coordinate with your therapist on how best to manage this.

Is Telehealth Right for Me?

Telehealth is effective for many individuals and issues. However, it may not be the best fit for everyone. Consider:

  • Your comfort level with technology.
  • Your ability to create a private space for sessions.
  • The nature of the issues you are addressing (some severe conditions or crisis situations may be better suited for in-person care).

Please discuss with your therapist if you have any concerns or questions about whether telehealth is appropriate for you.

We are committed to providing high-quality therapy services, whether in-person or via telehealth. By following these best practices, you can help ensure your telehealth experience is positive and productive. If you have any technical questions about accessing our telehealth platform, please refer to our Client Portal & Technology resources or contact us for support.
